I wanted to post this, because this picture was taken in a very busy day and this was the fastest gig ever. I was in a hurry to shoot sports and I had about 15min of time to do this Rajasoitto -gig before that. I needed to have one picture for "culture" section. When I got to the festival site, I walked into the area and saw this symmetrical situation at the "backstage", took one frame and that was it. Gig was done in 20 seconds.

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: Barbie exhibition @ Pietarsaari. 02 Jul 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Barbie's choice of vehicle for the hot weather is of course the convertible car (notice the vague attempt to cling the picture to current weather).

Ken, Barbie's boyfriend was introduced couple of years after Barbie came around.

I have nothing to say, except it's amazing what desperation and couple of captions can do. The one on top ran as the frontpage picture. I arrived late to the museum because of other matters and the collector wasn't there, neither was nobody else who had anything to do with this. Out comes the lensbaby and rest is, well, history. I'm not really sure what to think about this.

WORK: Pohjolan Sanomat: Kalottijazz, saturday. 01 Jul 2009 Posted by Petri Uutela.

Kalottijazz 2009 was held last week(-end) in Tornio and Haparanda. I visited the festival area saturday and sunday. Saturday was really difficult day - our plans didn't go at all the way we were hoping for... We were not able to get in touch with the artists and/or match the time tables with them and twice during the day, I had to leave the area and go to shoot sports. The classic "be in two situation at the same time"... I knew, that I needed to get at least three pictures. One for front page, two for the actual story. I went to Tornio about 14.00 o'clock and had to go to office about 19.00. At 18.10 the front page picture and main picture for the story were still missing...

Paroni Paakkunainen performed at the local church later that evening. Here he is listening if God speaks to him (yes, listening to the acoustics). I needed to take picture of Paroni and also of Johanna Iivanainen...she was performing while we were interviewing Paroni. Clock was about 18.20 when we left the church and headed back to the festival area.

Johanna Iivanainen was interviewed earlier that day and I didn't have any pictures of her. When I got back to the festival site luckily she was just starting to sing her last song. This was pretty much my last change that day to photograph her and to get the front page picture. I ran on the side of the tent and took bunch of silhouette pictures and that was it. Quickly back to office.

These pictures will not win any pulitzers, but I was quite pleased because of the last minute save. Totally desperate situation turned out to be "o.k."...

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: A day of work. 30 Jun 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Following is a presentation of how a press photog's day can turn out in county newspaper like Keskipohjanmaa. I came to the office at 12 o'clock.

12.30. I go and shoot a gentleman with a beefarm for a story about how bees are low in numbers this summer.

13.00. I'm shooting Katariina Hänninen, a local singer with a fresh album of rock'n'roll songs coming out soon.

14.50. An interview with Tapio Kuittinen, chief executive for Clas Ohlson. He is kind enough to visit the local store for the picture.

15.30. Extreme wind is throwing around dust and sand at the seashore. Dust flies into your eyes, mouth, ears and everywhere. My equipment looks pretty used after this. Dust sticks and goes in to the smallest places.

17.30. I get a call from the office, barely hearing anything from the dust storm. A fire is blazing at Toholampi, a hour's drive away. I go there and shoot what's left of the fire.

Around 22.00 I'm done with the pictures and the tomorrow's paper is out of my hands. I go home and have a meeting with dr. Pepper.

Note: These pictures are almost a month old, I couldn't post this blog because the portrait of Katariina hadn't been published yet.

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: Karen people from Burma gather in Kokkola. 25 Jun 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Last sunday was the 134th national day of Burmese Karen people. About one hundred of Karens from around Finland had arrived to Kokkola for the celebration and a week of summer camping. It was an important part of the week to remind youngsters about old traditions and habits.
