PHOTOBLOG

IMPORTANT: The WORK blog is now combined with the regular blog. Click here for last year's WORK.

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: A peacock in Kannus. 07 Jun 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Indian Peacock hiding inside a tractor warehouse in Kannus, a town near Kokkola. It must have escaped from somewhere, or brought there by someone. Peacocks aren't exactly common in Finland, in fact they're supposed to live around Sri Lanka and some regions of India.. It is a mystery since peacocks can't fly more than few meters.

Maybe it is a sign of the end times!

WORK: Pohjolan Sanomat: Salmon fishing agreement and monitoring. 06 Jun 2009 Posted by Petri Uutela.

Finland and Sweden have been preparing fishing agreements to river Tornio for years and finally early this week somekind of compromise was made. But it really was a compromise - the deal is not great for anyone.
This was one of those gigs where the only option was to shoot people sitting at the table and try to make a picture that would connect to the news...

Monitoring of the salmon stocks and movements is done with computers and brand new underwater Didson sonar devices.  Jaakko Mattila and Atso Romakkaniemi at work.

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: Forest fire. 05 Jun 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Couple of hectares burned, no big deal, but all firemen from the region were there which is a huge risk if something else happens. Fires like this take time to get in control because water isn't easy to get to the site and wind can cause problems.

WORK: Pohjolan Sanomat: EU election campaigning 04 Jun 2009 Posted by Petri Uutela.
Ok, it's time for my debut for this summers WORK. I think I'll try to do it differently than last year: last year we tried to push pictures in daily basis and at times it felt that I had to post something that was not interesting for me -- the subjects or the actual pictures. This summer, I'll post maybe not so often, but still couple of times a week... The first three days at work have been really busy. For example yesterday, I had five gigs. That's quite a lot... Let's start with EU election campaing pictures:

The audience in Tornio didn't get kicks out of Mari Kiviniemi's speech - she is the minister of public administration and local government. Only about 10 listeners were present. In front, the cardboard version of EU election canditate Helena Aaltonen.

Jutta Urpilainen (left), the chair(wo)man of The Social Democratic Party of Finland, meeting people in Kemi.

Technical stuff: I have not shot with telephoto lens since last summer... Feels quite refreshing to use 70-200mm for a change, instead of my usual 35mm focal lenght.

Summer 03 Jun 2009 Posted by Samuli Ikäheimo.

An empty house burned down in Kauniainen.

This post doesn't fall under WORK section, I offered these and some other photos to a newspaper, but they had no interest. It looks like my summer is mostly free, jobless, and it's annoying as my motivation to photograph is really high right now.

Oh well, at least I have time for own projects.

WORK: Keskipohjanmaa: Smoking in bars over for good. 02 Jun 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Pia Piispanen of Haka-Pub is happy with the smoking situation. As of this monday, all bars must be clear of smoke, even the ones that had special permits 2 years ago when the law was set.

Lea Hotari-hopia has no problem smoking outside. "It will never be so expensive that I'll quit", she says about the costs of cigarettes.

As you have noticed, WORK has started again! It will be a daily effort and it will feature on the FRONTPAGE along with the normal blog. So you don't have to clickety click around for WORK material and the regular blog. Last year's WORK can be seen here.
What do you think, is it good to mix the blogs or should we keep the WORK separate.. Your opinion counts!

Tuomari Nurmio. 27 May 2009 Posted by Jussi Leinonen.

Petri's flower picture was a hard act to follow, so I put 4 pictures to even begin to stay on the same level.

Anyway it's about time to kick in WORK BLOG again. We want to ask you, do you want it to be separate like last summer, or in the same blog as the regular shit.. RSS feed works only in the WORK one.

If you're new to Strap blogs, WORK blog is about summer job material. The very material that earned me the most bad ass photog award last year. It runs daily with stories and pictures from the work life, the trials and tribulations.

Give your opinion in the comments. Do you want it to be separate blog, or put everything in the same hole. THANKS!

Flowers. 26 May 2009 Posted by Petri Uutela.

Something has changed in me. I have noticed that I see photographic interest in things that I didn't care about before - like flowers. That's strange. And do you know what - this would look great on your living room wall. Prints for sale.
